Stem cell fraud. Three people in the United States were recently arrested for manufacturing, selling, and treating patients with unapproved stem cell products. A licensed midwife obtained the stem cells from umbilical cord blood at a Texas clinic, then sold them to a laboratory in South Carolina. A man posing as a licensed physician took the stem cells to Mexico, where he treated patients with cancer, multiple sclerosis, and other diseases. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning that Hemacord, used to treat disorders of the hematopoietic system, is the only FDA-approved stem cell therapy in the United States.
