Dear
Colleague,
For this issue of our eNewsletter, I thought I'd put together a table to help review the terms isotonic, hypertonic, and hypotonic. I hope it is helpful to you - it was a good review for me!
TYPE OF FLUID |
DEFINITION |
EXAMPLES |
Isotonic |
- 0.9% sodium chloride
- lactated Ringer's solution
- 5% dextrose in water
- Ringer's solution
Hypotonic |
Hypertonic |
It surprised me to put D5W in the list of examples for isotonic solutions. Find out more about this by reading I.V. Fluids: What Nurses Need To Know. Also, read more about I.V. therapy by checking out the other articles in our More Resources section. Don't miss our next issue about skin cancer plus new articles and CE!
