Abstract

Obesity is often associated with type 2 diabetes, and both are reaching epidemic proportions. Diets for obesity and type 2 diabetes support cardiovascular disease risk reduction as a primary goal (Fig 1). Wholesome sources of carbohydrate-whole grains, legumes, vegetables, fruits, and reduced-fat dairy products-account for most of the food energy, with lesser amounts of calories from fats, emphasizing those containing unsaturated and omega-3 fatty acids, and lean sources of protein.
