Abstract
Food aversions, taste changes, and loss of appetite are common adverse effects following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery. Although the etiology is not clear, an attempt to understand the mechanisms associated with gastrointestinal secretions and the central nervous system following RYGB surgery is discussed. A RYGB case report highlights the complex role on how a patient learns to establish new eating habits. The patient suffered from severe food aversions that inhibited a normal eating progression from liquids to solid food following surgery. Nutrition intervention with extensive emotional support was used to retrain negative food aversion stimuli within the central nervous system. Outcomes measured included weight loss, advancement of food textures, and caloric intake.
