I was interested in reading about the American Indian patient who uses peyote for religious reasons and brought some to the hospital ("Sacramental Peyote: Standing on Ceremony," Ethical Problems, October 2005). I was surprised that the nurse-manager was so quick to want to involve the police. When a patient tells us that he's using a nonprescription drug (ceremonial or recreational, legal or not), he's sharing the information for the purpose of getting quality care. If he feels intimidated by the attitudes of health care professionals, he's less likely to share this critical information for fear that his medical concern will become a legal or criminal matter.
