Abstract

 At the small community hospital where I work, I recently cared for an American Indian patient from a nearby reservation who was admitted for chest pain. When I took his medication history, he told me he uses peyote for religious reasons and showed me a small bag of it hanging from a string around his neck. I asked him to talk with his physician about the drug and advised him not to take it without his physician's permission because it could interact with other powerful medications he'd be taking. Then I documented this information in his medical record and notified his physician.
