Abstract

This pilot study was developed to evaluate a home-based weight management program based on the Transtheoretical (Stages of Change) Model designed to help overweight adults decrease dietary fat and caloric intake while increasing physical activity with the focus on lifestyle modification to improve health. Thirty-one overweight adults (body mass index 27-40 kg/m2) were referred by their physicians to the 12-week program; 20 completed the program and 16 provided 3-month follow-up data. Participants completing the home-based program and providing follow-up data at all time points (n = 14) lost an average of 4.6 kg over 6 months, which was reflected in a mean reduction in body fat and body mass index. Participants decreased dietary fat and saturated fat, increased servings of fruits and vegetables, and increased aerobic capacity (p < .05).
