Keeping donated livers warm may be better than cold storage for transplantation. Preserving a donated liver by perfusion with a normothermic solution instead of an ice-cold solution-the typical method of preservation-may be of clinical benefit, according to a study in the May issue of Nature. UK researchers compared both methods, finding there was no difference between them in graft or in patient survival, but that preservation times were extended in the normothermically preserved group. The authors concluded that normothermic preservation was "feasible, safe, and effective."
