Abstract

Development of pathways to achieve focused area, specialist, and advanced nutrition and dietetics practice is important for the future of the profession. Some registered dietitians possess advanced knowledge and skills, but a clear and consistent route to advanced practice is unavailable. Credentials are available for specialists in focused areas of practice; an advanced practice credential is being explored. In the interim, registered dietitians can promote career growth using the Scope of Dietetics Practice Framework and the Dietetics Career Development Guide. Competencies can be attained through continuing professional education, advanced degree and certificate programs, residencies, and professional activities.
