Abstract
Breast-feeding affords numerous benefits to infants as well as their mothers. While a majority of mothers now elect to breast-feed, only about half of those who initiate breast-feeding continue to breast-feed for 6 months. This article describes a study of the feeding choices of 155 mothers that also explored why certain mothers decided to stop breast-feeding within the first 2 months. Similar to previous research, mothers reported returning to work or concerns about insufficient milk as the primary reasons given for terminating to breast-feed their babies. A subset of mothers (n = 83) was additionally queried on how much they enjoyed the act of feeding their infants. Comparing mothers who were still breast-feeding with those who had either switched to formula or used formula only, it was found that mothers who breast-fed enjoyed feeding their infants more than mothers who used formulas.
