Abstract

There are many behavioral and cognitive theories that are useful in nutrition counseling. There are also many strategies that a sports dietitian can use in his/her arsenal to educate athletes on proper food and fluid choices to fuel training and competition. Time is luxury for athletes, and many sports dietitians have limited opportunities to provide counseling to busy athletes. One communication model that might be useful is one used by public health officials in times of crisis, especially when communicating about high-risk situations. This article proposes the use of the crisis communication model to counsel athletes and provides case study illustrations using the model
