Abstract

ABSTRACT: Hemangiomas of infancy can be challenging to treat, especially when complicated by size, location, or ulceration. The treatment of hemangiomas with propranolol has given dermatologists an exciting new treatment option. This article provides an overview of hemangiomas of infancy. Types of hemangiomas are discussed, including corresponding risk factors. The proliferation and the involution of hemangiomas are reviewed. Traditional treatment choices are discussed, including the care of ulcerated hemangiomas. The role of nursing in care of hemangiomas and the support of parents are reviewed. The treatment of infantile hemangiomas with propranolol is introduced and discussed as a promising new development in pediatric dermatology.
