Cepheid has received FDA clearance for its XpertClostridium difficiletest, an on-demand molecular diagnostic test designed for 45-minute detection of the bacterium that causes C. difficile infection (CDI). The Xpert is the first test for CDI that delivers both rapid turnaround and a high degree of accuracy. It has been cleared for the direct detection of toxigenic C. difficile from stool specimens, targeting the toxin B gene-the critical component of all toxigenic C. difficile strains, including the epidemic 027/NAP1/BI strain. The Xpert runs on the company's GeneXpert System, which combines real-time polymerase chain reaction amplification and detection functions for fully integrated and automated nucleic acid analysis.
