ESOPHAGEAL pH MONITORING is the gold standard to determine the frequency and duration of episodes of gastric reflux into the esophagus. Correlating pH readings with the patient's symptoms over 24 to 48 hours helps the clinician determine if gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the cause.

Previously, esophageal pH testing required advancing the tip of a transnasal pH catheter to an area above the lower esophageal sphincter. The device, in place up to 24 hours, was uncomfortable and interfered with activities of daily living.
