A reader asked if she should report a colleague who might have diverted drugs (Ethical Problems, "Suspected Drug Diversion: Rumor Has It," December 2006). As a recovering drug addict, I believe that a nurse who reports another nurse in this situation could be saving her life. When someone reported me to my state's peer assistance program, I was angry at first. Then I learned that chemical dependency is a disease that can be treated.

The program helped me to change my life, love myself, and heal. It's been a wonderful journey, and I'm grateful to the person who picked up the phone to report me.
