The nose knows

The Dale Medical NasoGastric Tube Holder, a latex-free, woven fabric nose pad that stretches and conforms to the patient's nose, can stay in place for up to 3 days to stabilize nasogastric tube movement and prevent nasal irritation, erosion, or necrosis. The individually packaged holder features dual tabs that spiral wrap around the tube in opposite directions to securely centralize the tube in the nostril; the adhesive is skin-friendly, enhancing patient comfort. It's easy to apply and ideal for aspiration and feeding tubes.

Rapid results

Inverness Medical offers the Binax NOWStreptococcus pneumoniaeAntigen Test and the LegionellaUrinary Antigen Test. Both rapid tests provide results in 15 minutes. The S. pneumoniae test detects S. pneumoniae antigen in the urine of patients with pneumonia and in the cerebral spinal fluid of patients with meningitis. The Legionella test detects L. pneumophila serogroup 1 antigen (causes greater than 80% of Legionnaires disease cases) in the urine of patients with symptoms of pneumonia. These tests are simpler to use and require less training for clinical or laboratory staff than blood or sputum culture tests. Their rapid results help with early and accurate diagnosis so patients can get the treatment they need.

At the end of the rainbow

Masimo has expanded its Rainbow SET Pulse CO-Oximetry platform to include continuous and noninvasive monitoring of carboxyhemoglobin (SpCO) and methemoglobin (SpMeT), in addition to oxygen saturation levels. SpCO and SpMeT are dysfunctional forms of hemoglobin incapable of transporting oxygen, which reduces blood oxygenation and may induce hypoxemia. The Masimo Radical-7 bedside monitor can be ordered with the ability to monitor SpCO and SpMeT levels or it can be upgraded by purchasing optional software. The company is also introducing a full line of single-patient adhesive sensors to be used with the bedside monitor as well as a 10-foot cable, including adult, pediatric, infant, and neonatal sensors.

The pouches are lined with colorful, Koala-themed fabric panels to increase comfort. The products use the Stomahesive skin, hydrocolloid technology, and ConvaTec's patent-pending InvisiClose outlet, which allows for easier drainage and a softer closure.

Protect the skin you're in

Mikuni Corporation, manufacturer of Revenir Vitamin C Skincare System, offers a new sunscreen product, Sundurance MLT, which is being featured as part of the company's Sun Awareness Program. Sundurance MLT uses micro-pearl barrier technology-microscopic silicate molecules containing the UV-blocking chemical OMC that lay on the surface of the skin for up to 24 hours unless washed off. The molecules don't break open, so the skin is protected from the sun without the body being exposed to the chemical. The product also contains vitamin C, vitamin E, and Rutin microcapsules, which do break open when rubbed into the skin to provide antioxidant benefits.

This just in [horizontal ellipsis]

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of bevacizumab (Avastin) in combination with carboplatin and paclitaxel for the initial systemic treatment of patients with unresectable, locally advanced, recurrent or metastatic, nonsquamous, non-small-cell lung cancer. In a recent clinical trial, this combination increased the median overall patient survival time to 12.3 months from 10.3 months with only carboplatin and paclitaxel. The most common adverse reactions to bevacizumab that were observed include weakness, abdominal pain, headache, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. The most serious adverse reactions observed (some were fatal) include gastrointestinal perforation, hemorrhage, congestive heart failure, blockage of the arteries, abnormally high blood pressure, albumin deficiency in the blood, and wound healing complications.
