Executive development
Linda Carrick, RN, PhD, practice assistant professor, University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing; healthcare consultant, Wharton J&J executive fellow, recognizes the importance of organized personal and professional priorities. Her session, titled "Managing Expectations and Juggling Priorities," will explore interpersonal communication techniques that'll help you address interruptions, clarify responsibilities, ask for help, and delegate tasks.
"Every nurse leader must be knowledgeable in the business side of healthcare," says Carrick. "Understanding the costs of developing, implementing, and managing a nursing unit, clinic, OR, ICU, or ambulatory service gives nurse leaders the knowledge and power to positively impact patient care and become a partner in strategic planning."
Strategic planning is crucial to many aspects of nursing and is particularly important when it comes to patient safety. Kathy Harris, RN, CHE, MS, regional vice president of clinical services, Banner Health Western Region, will detail specific guiding principles for the role of the nurse leader in patient safety during her AONE-endorsed session "Direct Effect: Nurse Leaders Driving Patient Safety."
"Nursing's unique role as the manager of patient care places us in a position to impact the environment of care in such a way as to ensure it's a safe one for our patients," she says. "The leadership imperative is to establish a vision for patient safety, allocate appropriate resources to achieve that vision, and above all, to ensure that a culture of safety is established in which the staff practice reinforces that."
In her session titled "Developing and Implementing a Nursing Peer-Review Process," Vickie M. Moore, RN, CHE, CNAA, BC, MSN, senior vice president of operations, chief nurse officer, Saint Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta, will discuss the development and implementation of a nursing peer-review committee. She'll also tackle the topics of committee membership and leadership, case referral and review process, circumstances leading to peer review, and rating criteria.
"This session describes how Saint Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta created a clinical peer review committee for nursing that parallels medical staff peer review function," Moore explains. "It's a multidisciplinary committee comprised largely of staff nurses with representation from medical staff, nursing leadership, the CNO, and the CEO. I'll discuss several examples of trends identifying the need to change or modify processes to improve patient safety."
