I had malignant melanoma at age 21. I was not offered counseling at the time of discharge; instead, a physician told me to look forward and not backward. My new husband and I struggled through the ensuing months, developing necessary skills and insights. Many health care providers may not be aware of the long-term implications of cancer and its treatment. We must do more to provide long-term support for the cancer patient.
