Abstract

I work in the crisis unit of a hospital, where most of the patients are being assessed for suicidal behavior or substance abuse. The administration announced a decision recently to change the unit from a secure unit that's locked 24/7 to one that's unlocked during the day. Here's the rub: They don't plan to hire extra staff to watch the doors, the monitors showing the doors, or the patients to make sure unauthorized people don't enter or leave.
