On a busy shift in the ED, a patient suddenly decided to go home. He'd come to the ED for evaluation of a painful inguinal hernia and was medically stable. He wouldn't say why he wanted to leave and signed the required against medical advice (AMA) form. When I asked him if he'd let me call a relative to pick him up, he refused, saying he'd drive himself home.
