Abstract

The aims of this article are to (1) identify the barriers associated with palliative care for persons with advanced dementia, (2) argue the need for increased collaboration and partnerships between aged care and palliative key providers, and (3) discuss the need for the development and evaluation of evidence-based guidelines for care. Studies addressing these issues are discussed. A key finding of the material reviewed for this article underscores the importance of the development, implementation, and evaluation of guidelines that are empirically based, developed collaboratively, and incorporated into models of care for people with advanced dementia.
