One of my home care patients is ventilator-dependent. The other night, the heated humidifier on her ventilator circuit malfunctioned and stopped heating the humidified air. I continued to run cool mist until I got the heater working again, and my patient seemed fine. That got me wondering—is heating the humidified air really necessary?
