The National Children' s Study, created by the Children's Health Act of 2000, which funds research on a variety of childhood diseases, is slated to start enrolling participants by year end. It will follow 100,000 children and their families for at least 21 years to examine their health at various ages and stages in their lives and determine the influences of different factors on their health, "from family genetics; to the constructed world of neighborhoods and schools; to chemical exposures linked to the atmosphere, food, or water supplies; to the social and behavioral environment in which the children grow and develop."
