The FDA has approved ibandronate sodium (Boniva), an oral bisphosphonate, as a convenient once-monthly treatment for preventing and treating postmenopausal osteoporosis. Other bisphosphonates on the market to treat osteoporosis (including Boniva, which has been available for once-daily dosing) must be taken at least weekly.

During 3 years of clinical trials, Boniva, 150 mg monthly, reduced new vertebral fractures in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis and increased bone mineral density in postmenopausal women who didn't have the disease. After 1 year, the monthly dose was found to be at least as effective at increasing bone mineral density as the 2.5-mg daily dose of Boniva. Common adverse reactions included abdominal pain, ...
