This session will provide attendees with an extensive update on the liver. An overview of anatomy, physiology, and functions; interpretation of lab values; and common hepatology terms will be provided. In addition, diagnostic tests for the liver, biopsy interpretation, and vaccinations for Hepatitis A and B will be discussed. Hepatitis C epidemiology, transmission, risk, viral tests, genotype, treatment and side effects, counseling, and support groups will be covered along with issues related to coinfection with Hepatitis B virus, Hepatitis C virus, and human immunodeficiency virus. Other topics to be covered are liver transplantation, other liver diseases (hemachromatoses, biliary atresia, Wilson's disease, alpha 1 antitrypsin, NASH, and primary biliary cirrhosis), and complications of liver disease. A pre- and post-test will be included.

We are pleased to present the Abstracts from the SGNA's 32nd Annual Course: Passion for GI Nursing: Pass It On!! The diversity of these topics certainly reflects the richness and breadth of our specialty. In keeping with the tradition of the Annual Course, we hope the following abstracts will encourage discussions for improving nursing practice and patient care outcomes.
