    In my new position as nurse practitioner at a busy family practice clinic, I care for many patients in their 70s and 80s. They have real worries about Medicare costs and other issues affecting their quality of life. I listen carefully to their concerns as I take their histories and encourage them to ask me questions. I think I've developed good rapport with most of the patients I see .

    Yesterday one of the physicians told me he doesn't think I'm suited for the clinic's fast pace because I “dawdle” too much listening to patients. I was taken aback because my patients have real problems to discuss. I don't want to treat people like objects on an assembly line, but I don't want to lose this job either.
