THE NATIONAL Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Web site, www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/bbp/safer , offers five steps for implementing safety-engineered sharps, along with tips from health care facilities that have followed them. Here are the steps with some useful tips:
1. Form a sharps injury prevention team .
* Enlist hospital administrators and medical and nursing staff as leaders to sustain team members' interest and participation. Consider forming a separate team for the OR, which has unique needs and procedures.
* Encourage team members to attend every meeting; if they can't, e-mail messages can fill in the gaps.
2. Identify conversion priorities .
