Do you know how to select shoes that will help keep your feet healthy? Here are some basic tips from the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society:

    * A healthy shoe is one that's shaped like your foot. Look for a shoe that has a roomy, rounded, or square toe.

    * Buy shoes made of buttery soft material that has some give, like glove leathers.

    * Keep your feet comfortable by favoring flat shoes (those with a heel height of 1 inch [2.5 cm] or less).

    * Look for soles that are shock absorbing and skid resistant.

    * Avoid shoes with heavy rubber soles that curl over the front (such as those on some running shoes) because they can catch on rugs and trip you up.

    * Avoid shoes that have seams over painful or deformed areas, such as a bunion.

    * Keep in mind that laced shoes provide a more secure fit than slip-on styles and can accommodate insoles, orthotic devices, and braces.
