MYTH: Seat belts can trap you in the vehicle or cause severe injuries. If the vehicle catches fire or becomes submerged, you're better off if you're thrown clear .

FACT: Death by fire or drowning accounts for less than 0.1% of motor-vehicle-related trauma. Most passengers ejected from vehicles are thrown through the windshield and die. Seat belts can cause injuries, but infrequently. Most injuries occur because the belt was worn incorrectly. In some cases, the crash was so severe that the person would have been more seriously injured or killed if he hadn't worn a seat belt.

MYTH: Seat belts are important mainly for long trips and high-speed expressway driving .
