I saw the call for nominations for the Caring for the Caregiver Award (February) and thought perhaps the award is recognizing someone such as me, who has become practically homebound while caring for my husband. But that wasn't the case.

During 36 years as an RN, I went home at the end of each shift and received a paycheck for my work. Nurses have their own name and professional identity. I am now a caregiver. We have no title, no professional organization, very little support, and we receive little recognition for our work. We don't have days off or receive paychecks. In addition to providing nursing care, we are also housekeepers, dietitians, physical therapists, and occupational therapists to our loved ones.
