AFTER 12 YEARS of nursing in the medical/surgical unit, I decided that I needed a new challenge. So I transferred to the ED, hoping to master the skills of an ED nurse.
After a few weeks, however, I felt as if I'd made a mistake. I knew little about the myriad conditions I was expected to identify and assess. And I didn't get a chance to know my patients during their brief stays in the ED. I missed the connections I used to make with patients, the continuity of care in the medical/surgical unit, and the satisfaction I got from feeling that I played a role in their recovery. So after several weeks, I requested to transfer back to my old unit.
