  • Abstract

Help your patient come in from the cold by following this algorithm.

Severe hypothermia is associated with reduced cerebral blood flow and oxygen requirement, decreased cardiac output, and reduced arterial blood pressure. Patients with hypothermia can appear dead because of diminished brain and cardiovascular function.

Initial treatment for all patients with hypothermia includes assessing responsiveness, breathing, and pulse, and providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if indicated. Next remove wet garments, protecting the patient against heat loss, avoiding rough movement and unnecessary activity (which can trigger arrhythmias), monitoring core temperature and cardiac rhythm, and maintaining the patient in a supine position.
