"The opportunity to create a caring environment for patients and staff has remained one of my highest priorities for the past 30 years as a nurse," says Janis Kohlbrenner, RN, PhD, Vice-President for Clinical Services/Chief Nursing Officer, St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center, Syracuse, N.Y.
"My nurse colleagues have made the greatest influence on my career," says Kohlbrenner. "No matter what role I've assumed, my peers and the leaders that I've worked with always focused on what matters-caring."
Setting unique standards

As an administrator at Shriners Hospitals for Children, Tampa, Fla., Alice Lanford, RN, MSN, CNAA, influences the planning and development of the physical care environment. "I enjoy setting the standard and working with direct care staff to positively impact overall care at the highest level," says Lanford.
A nursing professional of 30 years, Lanford credits her first head nurse as a great influence. "She taught me that I could set the standard for my own patient care practice, no matter what others did from their schools of thought."
