Nutrition Today EB Member, Gordon Jensen, Appointed to the Food and Nutrition Board
Nutrition Today Editorial Board member, Gordon Jensen, MD, PhD, has been appointed to the Food and Nutrition Board, a division of the National Institutes of Medicine. The Food and Nutrition Board studies issues of national and global importance on the safety and adequacy of the US food supply; establishes principles and guidelines for good nutrition; and provides authoritative judgment on the relationships among food intake, nutrition, and health maintenance and disease prevention. Gordon is currently professor and chair at the Department of Nutritional Sciences at Pennsylvania State University. His research area includes nutritional concerns of older persons, nutrition screening for risk in elderly populations, obesity and function in older persons, and inflammation in nutrition and medicine.

Nutrition Today Editorial Board Member, Kennedy, to Step Down as Dean at Tufts
Eileen T. Kennedy, dean of the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, has announced that she will leave her position at the end of the academic year after many years of dedicated service. After a sabbatical year spent working on research and an important global nutrition effort, she will return to the faculty at the Friedman School. Last month, the Friedman School announced that it was the recipient of a $15 million award from the US Agency for International Development to implement a Global Nutrition Collaborative Research Support Program focused on multidisciplinary research and action programs in Asia and Africa. Under Dean Kennedy's leadership, the Friedman School collaborated with the government of Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, to establish a 1-year master's degree program focused on nutrition and public health issues and challenges in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. Editorial Board member, Lynne Ausman, PhD, RD, was named as the endowed professor established by the ruler of the Emirate, and she leads the educational efforts there. The academic excellence of the Friedman School faculty was recently recognized in the National Research Council's 2010 graduate program assessment, which found the PhD program in nutrition to be among the very best in the country. We look forward to hearing about Eileen's future contributions and to reading the book that she is planning to write next year!
Leadership Changes in ODP
Dr Barnett (Barry) Kramer, associate director for disease prevention, National Institutes of Health (NIH), since 2001 has retired after a distinguished 24-year career. He started working as a senior investigator at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and moved to the NCI Division of Cancer Prevention and Control, first as associate director and then as the deputy director. In 2000, he was selected as the director of the Office of Medical Applications of Research, and starting in 2001 to the present, Dr Kramer has provided overall direction to the prevention research program at the NIH. Dr Paul Coates has agreed to serve as acting director of ODP, pending recruitment for that position, while continuing to serve as director of the Office of Dietary Supplements at NIH, and Dr Stephen Groft agreed to serve as acting director of the Office of the Medical Applications of Research, as well as continuing in his position as director of the Office of Rare Diseases Research.
In Memoriam
Ethan A. H. Sims, a direct descendant of Ethan Allen and a physician who was known internationally for his work in experimental obesity and diabetes, passed away on November 9, 2010. A long-time much revered and beloved professor at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, Sims will be remembered not only for his teaching and path-finding obesity research but also for his community involvement. He also was an ardent sailor and supporter of music in the region, playing the clarinet in the Amateur Musicians, and a devoted husband.
Advances in Nutrition Free to ASN Members
Advances in Nutrition, a bimonthly journal dedicated to publishing state-of-the-science reviews in all aspects of the nutritional sciences, is available free to American Society of Nutrition members as a membership benefit. Review articles published in Advances will explain the significance of new research findings and highlight research gaps. In addition to review articles, Advances in Nutrition will publish summaries of government and foundation reports on topics in nutrition, nutrient information articles, symposium and conference proceedings, and other content of value to nutritionists and allied health professionals. CRN Announces New Leadership
The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), a trade association representing the dietary supplement industry, announced that Jim Hamilton, president of DSM Nutritional Products, USA, Inc, has been elected chair of the association's Board of Directors. Mr Hamilton, who will hold the chairman post through 2012, succeeds Mark LeDoux, chief executive officer of Natural Alternatives International, Inc. Mr LeDoux will continue to serve on the Board as immediate past chair. The CRN Board also elected a slate of new officers to serve alongside Mr Hamilton during his 2-year term: Chair-elect-John Blair, NSA, LLC (Juice Plus+); treasurer-Ron Fugate, Alacer Corporation; and secretary-Kristen Blanchard, Nutramax Laboratories, Inc.
