Abstract

As the incidence of diabetes increases to epidemic proportions and the number and kinds of medications available for the management of type 2 diabetes increase, it is important for the dietetic professional to be aware of the interactions between medical nutrition therapy and pharmacotherapy. In this article, we review 3 patient cases that demonstrate basic concepts related to meal timing and medications for type 2 diabetes management. We focus on the medication and assume that the providers will follow accepted standards for medical nutrition therapy. Included are tables describing the characteristics of noninsulin diabetes medications and nutrition implications and characteristics of insulin products
